Cheering for you

Me:  Give me a M                            Audience:  M

Me:  Give me an A                           Audience:  A

Me:  Give me a R                              Audience:  R

Me:  Give me a Y                               Audience:  Y

Me:  What’s that spell?                  Audience:  Mary, Mary, Mary!

I promise I’ve never done this with an audience; however, I’m sharing it to make a point.  Early in my career I read that whenever you stand in front of an audience you should keep in mind that the audience wants you to succeed.  Over the years, I’ve come to believe this.

Here’s why the audience wants you to succeed.  Whether it’s a 30-minute presentation or a full-day of strategic planning, the audience is stuck with you, so if you do well, they have a much better experience.  The better you are in your role, the more enjoyable it is for them.  If you are on your game, their opportunity to learn, be engaged, be entertained, and be inspired increases!

I remind myself of this as I take my place in the front of the room as it provides a last-minute boost of confidence and helps calm my nerves.  Your audience may not shout your name but they are cheering for you!
